Plantar Fasciitis – Arch Pain – Heel Pain Treatment

Plantar fasciitis is a common diagnosis that is given for heel painThe plantar fascia is a thick, ligamentous band that runs from your heel up to your toes, and plays an integral role in stabilisation of the foot. By definition, plantar fasciitis is acute or chronic inflammation of the plantar fascia where it attaches into the calcaneus (the heel bone). However, many studies have found that there are often no inflammatory cells present, even when symptoms are present!

The main symptom of plantar fasciitis is shooting or aching pain in the heel when first getting out of bed in the morning, or when getting up after sitting for a long period of time. It most commonly affects one foot only, but can affect both. The pain may radiate to the outside of the foot or up into the arch, and is usually relieved with rest. The onset of the pain is usually sudden and not related to a traumatic injury. Plantar fasciitis commonly occurs in people who are on their feet for long periods of time or who are particularly active.

There are also a number of risk factors that have been suggested to contribute to the development of plantar fasciitis. These include:

  • Tight calf muscles
  • Flat feet
  • High arches
  • Prolonged standing on hard surfaces
  • Poor footwear
  • Arthritis of the big toe

Podiatrists can diagnose plantar fasciitis and assist you with multiple treatment options such as dry needling, exercises and orthotics to address flat feet and any other biomechanical problems. Treatment may also include taping of the feet, footwear advice, stretching and deep tissue massage.
